POSITION SUMMARY

The Fine Arts Coordinator plays a pivotal role in expanding and sustaining a dynamic Fine Arts program, encompassing visual arts, music, dance, and other creative disciplines, for both the St. John’s community and the broader Des Moines metro area. Through innovative leadership and strategic vision, the Coordinator fosters a vibrant cultural environment that enriches the local artistic landscape and engages a diverse range of participants. Working under the supervision of the Director of Worship, and in concert with the St. John’s Pastor(s) and staff, the Arts Visioning Team, and the St. John’s Church Council, the Fine Arts Coordinator will further the purpose and vision of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Arts Visioning Team in planning and executing a comprehensive Fine Arts program.
  • Collaborate with St. John’s Pastor(s), the Director of Worship and the Arts Visioning Team to create long and short-term strategies for growth of the fine arts program at St. John’s.
  • Liaison between artists, musicians, church staff, Fine Arts team, and volunteers to ensure high quality programming.
  • Supervise fund-raising to fully support the Arts program, including special events, String Scholars program, and stipends for choral scholars.
  • Collaborate on the Arts Patrons Party donation solicitation alongside the Director of Worship, Communications Manager, Events Specialist, and the Arts Visioning Team.
  • Create and sustain a sense of community and purpose among volunteers and participating artists.
  • Develop healthy relationships with the St. John’s community, patrons and potential patrons, and artists/musicians within the congregation and the Des Moines metro area.
  • Represent St. John’s and its Arts program in local activities throughout the Des Moines area.

INTERACTIONS

  • Reports to the Director of Worship, Lead Organist & Choir
  • Collaborates with the Communications Manager to promote events though social media, electronic and print materials
  • Collaborates with the Finance Specialist on annual program budget, tracking and reporting all Fine Arts fundraising efforts as needed
  • Networks with Office Manager to ensure events are on the church calendar, and St. John’s spaces, if needed, are reserved

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong background and experience in the arts and arts-related programs
  • Experience successfully coordinating and executing arts-based events
  • Knowledge of working with and supervising volunteers
  • Ability to meet deadlines; solicit and share information in a timely manner
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Knowledge and awareness of faith practices of the ELCA
  • Effective writing, organizational, and communication abilities
  • Knowledge of appropriate software programs, including Microsoft Office

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years professional work experience in an arts-related field
  • Experience working in a church or non-profit environment desirable
  • A commitment to actively promoting an inclusive and welcoming community and to work for racial equity and justice
