Sometimes it’s hard to stay on top of your game when it comes to doing homework or preparing for a test, but we’re here to help. Here are eight effective study tips, brought to you by Carthage College students, to help you be successful in your college classes.
“A study tip that I have used for so long is to plan ahead. I love staying organized and keeping track of all of my assignments and upcoming tests. I do this by making a giant Google spreadsheet with all upcoming tasks. This way, I can easily know when I need to work on something or start studying for a test.” —
“The best study tip I have for other students is to have breaks throughout your study time. It’s helped me a lot with my focus and retention of information in a lot of my classes. Taking breaks while studying gives you mental breaks and can help keep you engaged in what you’re doing.” —
“Study with friends who are also studious. It helps so much to get in that mindset when you have someone else holding you accountable.”
“One study tip that has really helped me to succeed here at Carthage is utilizing the study rooms in the library. The individual and group study rooms are great places to go to focus on something like an exam or a paper because they are both quiet places that provide students with a space to really focus on what you need to do without distractions.” —
“I would suggest using the tutors in your class, if they have them. Sometimes, even if you think you are doing fine in class, the tutor can help you understand something differently, and it might give you a different outlook on a topic.” —
“One of the best study tactics I’ve used is active recalling. After reviewing and processing the material, I find a friend who knows nothing about the topic and try to explain it to them in the smallest detail possible. This forces me to break down the concepts and understand the underlying processes in a way that I might not have if I had just reviewed the material on my own” — Fedor Barilov ’27
“A study tip that I think is important is to talk to your professors! They are great resources for information and wisdom, and they’ve dedicated so much of their time and passion for learning and teaching their subjects. They are always more than happy to help you if you’re struggling. There are also excellent on-campus resources, like peer tutoring and the Brainard Writing Center, for additional help.” —
“Everyone studies differently! Some can’t study alone and only in groups, and vice versa. For me personally, I can get so much work done when I go with friends who keep me productive and locked in.” —
