Summary This position is located in Region 6, on the Deschutes National Forest, in Bend, OR. The incumbent is responsible for providing native tree and plant seed extraction, storage services, and growing container seedlings for government agencies in the region. Basic Requirement: For the GS-0401 Series: Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Degree: Biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. For the GS-0437 Series: Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Degree: Horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post harvest handling of horticultural crops. OR Combination of education and experience. Courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Evaluation of Education: Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, and similar courses may be used to meet the 30 semester hour requirement in basic plant sciences. The 16 semester hour requirement in horticulture includes course work in basic horticulture and course work related to any of the recognized subject-matter fields of horticulture, i.e., fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, nursery work, seed production, or course work in related areas of science, such as micro-biology, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, or genetics that is directly related to horticultural work. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: GS-11: Applicants must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a PhD. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent Doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); OR One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes meeting two or more of the following: Helped to provide administrative oversight of all work performed at a nursery facility to ensure quality and quantity are maintained; and/or assisted in formulating an annual and long-range plans that identified objectives, production goals, and budget projections in support of annual program of work; and/or performed as a Contracting Officers Representative (COR) or equivalent, for services and materials provided; and/or created publications, reports, and provided technical training and advice on seed handling and plant propagation; and/or helped to oversee administrative studies int eh fields of bare-root stock production, container stock production, seed production, seed handling and storage and stock quality monitoring; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more that 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). GS-12: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Qualifying specialized experience includes meeting two or more of the following: Provided administrative oversight of all work performed at a nursery facility to ensure quality and quantity are maintained; and/or formulated annual and long-range plans that identified objectives, production goals, and budget projections in support of annual program of work; and/or performed as a Contracting Officers Representative (COR) or equivalent, for services and materials provided; and/or created publications, reports, and provided technical training and advice on seed handling and plant propagation ; and/or oversaw administrative studies in the fields of bare-root stock production, container stock production, seed production, seed handling and storage and stock quality monitoring.
