Position Summary:
This position is within the public safety department and is charged with creating a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Law Enforcement/Campus Resource Officer must meet Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards ( MCOLES ) certification. This position works to educate the campus community regarding safety and security, minimize risk for the college and enforce all college policies and procedures and enforcement of the laws of the State of Michigan. These responsibilities are performed in an ethical manner consistent with the college mission, vision, and values which include diversity, equality and inclusion.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Establish a culture on campus where the public safety department is part of the community and works closely with community members to provide for the safety and security of the students, staff, faculty and visitors.
  • Provide campus patrols through foot patrol and motor vehicle operation (where applicable).
  • Perform escorts for students and employees to their cars and/or from building to building. Provide security for dignitaries and other visitors to the College.
  • Investigate and file remedial reports of security and safety concerns involving building structures, yards and parking lots on campus.
  • Maintain and utilize applicable security systems such as but not limited to card access systems, CCTV , key control and radio communications as assigned.
  • Provide medical services such as first aid, CPR and AED as needed and as trained.
  • Enforce college rules and regulations on campus, which includes conducting investigations and completing/filing necessary documentation.
  • Maintain building security by locking and unlocking College buildings and disarming and arming security alarms according to scheduled times.
  • Coordinate with non-sworn public safety staff.
  • Regulation and monitoring of parking conditions. Assisting students and employees that are locked out of their vehicles/classrooms and assist with jump starts.
  • Report fire and safety hazards on campus.
  • Provide lost and found property services.
  • Develop a basic understanding of the operation of building mechanical systems to facilitate communication and problem reporting to Facilities department, write up and route repair requisitions as needed.
  • Provide GREAT customer service, anticipating and exceeding the needs of our customers.
  • Demonstrate and promote the college values.
  • Broad knowledge of college policies and procedures including specialized knowledge of faculty, staff, and student issues.
  • Supervise and review the performance of subordinate personnel and see that the assignment of work has been carried out properly and efficiently in compliance with department procedures.
  • Regular attendance on campus is required for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Hours/Schedule:
In general, officers will be scheduled to work 8-hour shifts, day or afternoon, from Monday – Saturday. Additional hours during peak times or as required, and subject to 24-hour on-call for emergencies.

Work Environment: Duties are performed in an office environment, college buildings, and in the field. In the field, the employee is exposed to varying and extreme weather conditions.

Physical Demands:
  • Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public.
  • Must also have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls as well as running, bending, twisting, reaching, crawling through tight spaces, kneeling in confined areas, sitting for prolonged periods of time; moving/pushing/pulling or lifting heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Associate degree OR equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards ( MCOLES ) police certification or have met the requirements of MCOLES certification upon hire.
  • Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, drug screening, psychological exam, and physical examination.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in police department operations which should include investigations, patrol, community policing, evidence collection, leadership, and modern-day policing principles.
  • Must maintain an acceptable driving record as required by the college insurer.
  • Ability to professionally and confidentially investigate sensitive issues at all levels within the campus and to effectively present findings.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Strong report-writing skills.
  • Service oriented. Ability to have an exceptional customer service attitude at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately and effectively with computerized data systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive working environment, spirit of cooperation and positive reactions to change and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, both written and oral which transcend diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and relate well to students, parents, faculty, staff, and others while maintaining appropriate confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated motivational and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, and dedication to the mission of the College.
  • Must be able to work an irregular schedule, evenings and all days of the week as needed, additional hours during peak times or as required, and subject to 24-hour on-call for emergencies.
  • Must have the ability to meet physical demands listed above.

Salary/Hourly Rate: Starting at $27/hour
