Job Summary The Carbon Fitter is responsible for fabricating, fitting, and assembling carbon steel components used in subsea umbilicals, flowlines, and structural frameworks. This role requires a high level of precision, adherence to technical specifications, and compliance with industry standards to ensure the structural integrity of subsea equipment.
Essential Requirements, Duties and Responsibilities - Fit and assemble carbon steel components, including pipes, structural supports, and pressure-containing parts, according to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work orders to ensure precise fitting and fabrication.
- Prepare materials by cutting, grinding, beveling, and tacking to meet welding requirements.
- Work closely with welders, engineers, and quality control inspectors to ensure all components meet industry standards.
- Utilize measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, micrometers, and levels to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Ensure proper alignment, gap, and fit-up of parts before welding, minimizing the need for post-weld corrections.
- Operate fabrication equipment, including grinders, cutting torches, saws, and hydraulic presses.
- Follow welding procedures (ASME, API, AWS) and adhere to safety protocols, including PPE, hot work permits, and confined space entry regulations.
- Conduct quality checks and inspections before final welding and assembly.
- Assist in training and mentoring junior fitters as needed.
Education and Experience - High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification in metal fitting or fabrication preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a Carbon Fitter in the oil and gas, offshore, or subsea industry.
- Strong knowledge of carbon steel fabrication techniques, including cutting, beveling, and tacking.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, welding symbols, and isometric drawings.
- Experience working with large-diameter pipes, structural frames, and pressure vessels.
- Familiarity with NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) methods such as UT, RT, and MT for fit-up verification.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in offshore environments if required.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements: - Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for long periods, and work in hot, cold, or humid conditions.
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, dust, and welding sparks; proper PPE must be worn at all times.
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and shift work to meet project deadlines.
