For this exciting position, we are specifically targeting students who have a background in Engineering, Environmental Science or  a Sustainability related field. This outstanding opportunity will provide  the successful candidate with practical experience in closure and reclamation planning, biodiversity management, and sustainability initiatives at a mining operation. The position will work with the Senior Closure Lead, Biodiversity Lead, alongside other internal and external professionals to support the planning and delivery of closure, biodiversity and reclamation initiatives across all aspects of Red Dog’s operations! 

For this role, we offer a unique rotation schedule with 4 weeks on-site followed by 2 weeks off-site. You must also currently be a student enrolled in an American or Canadian post-secondary institution and will be enrolled throughout the duration of the co-op term (you will also be returning back to the post-secondary institution once the co-op term is completed). Proof of a valid work permit will also be required, if applicable.

Red Dog Operations is one of the world's largest zinc mines, located about 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska, near Kotzebue. Red Dog is an open-pit truck-and-loader operation, using conventional drill and blast mining methods. Concentrates produced at Red Dog are shipped to our metallurgical facilities in Trail, British Columbia, and to customers in Asia and Europe. The current mine life, based on existing developed deposits, is expected to extend through to 2031.  

This position operates on a four-weeks on, two-weeks off, fly-in, fly-out rotation, providing an excellent work-life balance. Transportation to and from the mine site will be covered. The mine site is a camp environment and all food and lodging is provided. On-site living accommodations also have many amenities to make life at the mine very comfortable. These include a gymnasium, indoor track, weightlifting rooms, a library/media room, craft and music rooms, and a cafeteria where you are served three home-cooked meals a day. Salary Range: $4000 - $5100 / Month 

Salary is commensurate with the number of academic semesters and prior co-op experiences completed. 

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Assist in the preparation and update of a regulatory closure plan update, aligned with corporate standards
  • Contribute to closure planning efforts that align with the life-of-mine strategy
  • Assist in active closure activities by collecting, analyzing, and monitoring data related to tailings, water, and land management
  • Maintain proper field notes and documentation as well as various reports related to regulatory, legal, permitting or compliance purposes through the use of spreadsheet, word processing and database software
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams on closure and reclamation projects. Tasks may include coordinating logistical aspects of site visits, working on reclamation and biodiversity projects, preparation of materials for meetings, and collecting and managing environmental data
  • Participate in meetings and technical discussions with external professionals responsible for delivery of closure, reclamation, and biodiversity related programs across the operation
  • Assist with identifying closure and reclamation opportunities and their integration into closure planning schedules
  • Prepare presentation materials and participate in Red Dog’s external engagement activities, including community meetings, agency site visits, projects consultations, and other communications related to closure and reclamation

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a relevant Engineering, Environmental Science, or a Sustainability related field (e.g. environmental engineering, civil engineering, environmental science, natural resources, geology, ecology, biology, hydrology)
  • A valid Driver's License is required  
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with attention to detail. Proven capacity in practical problem solving and critical thinking in considered an asset
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite. Experience with GIS or other planning tools and software is considered an asset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings, including technical writing, data analysis and reporting
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and engage with diverse stakeholders
  • Knowledge of mine closure principles, environmental regulations, and mine closure industry standards. Knowledge of relevant legislation and traditional knowledge is an asset
  • Experience in arctic environments would be considered an asset
  • Must be willing to work outdoors with a potential exposure to extreme climatic conditions
  • Ability to work productively with nominal supervision independently and collaboratively across various levels of the organization
