Job Description

Saint David’s School is seeking an experienced Controller to join our dynamic community.  This is a full-time, 12-month, on-site, exempt position.  Reporting to the Director of Finance and Administration, the Controller is responsible for overseeing and directing the School’s day-to-day accounting, budget implementation, and external financial reporting. The Controller assists the administration by ensuring the prudent use of those resources through strong internal controls and effective transaction processing routines to protect the assets of the school that result in meaningful, timely, and accurate financial reporting.  The Controller serves as a member of the Business Office and is an instrumental partner in managing the school finances and operations.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervise all day-to-day operations of the School’s accounting systems, e.g., the general and sub-ledgers, accounts payable, account receivables, and other related accounting functions.
  • Provide support for student re-enrollment and continued student billing/receipting processes.
  • Provide support for the School’s financial aid program.
  • Provide support for all disbursement functions.
  • Prepare all bank and investment account reconciliations monthly.
  • Prepare semi-monthly payrolls and liaison with the HR Director on all related matters.
  • Coordinate with HR to manage the Schools various employee benefit program obligations.
  • Reconcile, on a timely basis, all ledger gift accounts to Development Office records.
  • Provides accurate and timely financial and management reports as requested.
  • Assists the Director of Finance and Administration in monitoring the annual operating budget. Prepares variance reports as requested.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, tax filings, professional standards, and internal policies.
  • Lead the preparation of the annual audit (financial and pension) and coordinate with the school’s auditors.
  • Collaborate with internal and external constituencies, e.g., the Board, auditors, the head of school, and the Development Team, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance & Administration.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
  • A strong background in financial systems and modeling, business services, accounting principles, and computerized accounting systems. Audit experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Financial Edge, Smart Tuition, and Veracross software a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate widely with various constituencies throughout the School’s community, including students, faculty, staff, Board, alumni, parents, and vendors.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen eye for detail; 
  • Excellent judgment and discretion in responding to urgent, confidential matters;

Salary Range for this position is $105,000 - $115,000, commensurate with experience.
