Reporting to the Senior Executive Director, Donor Stewardship and Engagement, the Director provides strategic direction and recommendations for long-range/short-range planning of the unit's goals including operations, direction, and oversight of staff for both University Advancement and Health Advancement. The director provides guidance to the team to achieve events management goals and assists professional staff on the more complex and sensitive events issues. In the absence of the Senior Executive Director, this position will represent the Senior Executive director and/or the Office of Special Events and Protocol at meetings and events both on and off campus. Serves as a liaison between the campus departments and the Office of Special Events and Protocol. In addition, the Director of Special Events and Protocol is responsible for developing, planning, executing and analyzing programs and events to cultivate the interest of friends and prospects, and engage and deepen UCI’s relationship with internal and external communities.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $94,400- $129,000 (Annual).

• Strong knowledge of management principles, policies, concepts and best practices and skill to select, train, mentor, evaluate and, as required, take disciplinary action with subordinate staff.
• Strong knowledge of all aspects of event management and production and public relations.
• Strong knowledge of the campus, its vision, mission, goals, programs, policies and infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of program management, including comprehensive staff and budget administration.
• Strong interpersonal communications skills to build and foster a collaborative and cooperative work environment and build to maintain good working relationships with all organizational levels and outside constituencies.
• Strong political acumen and skill in judgment, decision-making and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.
• Strong leadership / management skills, including skills to lead, direct, mentor, evaluate and motivate staff.
• Broad knowledge of fundraising practices
• Resourcefulness in finding appropriate solutions to problems and initiative in presenting alternatives and implementing solutions to ensure effective change. Ability to anticipate problems and take necessary action to eliminate or mitigate potential negative effects.
• Ability to be flexible in working independently as well as collaboratively with Advancement and faculty and staff to achieve defined goals. Use initiative to organize and follow through with complex tasks to meet deadlines.
• Possess traits of good judgment, confidentiality and discretion in communicating with colleagues and constituents.
• Experience in development and systematically monitoring budgets for special events and the ability to make recommendations to control costs for events.
• Ability to analyze complex programmatic problems and situations and quickly determine viable alternatives.
• Six years of experience in planning and implementing small and large special events and supervision of special events staff. (This includes all logistics associated with event planning and execution).
• Five years of supervisor/management experience.

Special Conditions:

• Must be able to work nights and weekends as required for events.
• May be required to travel on occasion in order to perform the routine or essential job responsibilities for the position.
