The City of Dixon is recruiting to fill one full-time position of Fire Battalion Chief and to establish an eligibility list for future vacancies. The Fire Battalion Chief will act as a shift commander, ensure operational readiness for emergency response and perform emergency command and control functions; to provide highly responsible staff assistance to Fire Administration; and to manage and participate in administrative tasks, programs, and projects.

Exam Process: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience will be invited to participate in the following:
The most qualified candidates from the assessment process will be placed on an employment eligibility list. The Fire Chief will make a final selection from candidates in the certified employment list.
Note: The examination process may be changed as deemed necessary.
Employment Processing: Selected candidates will be required to successfully complete a Personal History Statement (PHS) review, personal background investigation, pre-employment medical, and drug test, an 18-month probationary period, and in accordance with Federal law, are able to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.
Failure of any component during the exam/employment process eliminates the candidate.
Veteran's Preference Points: Veteran's Preference Points will be applied. A PDF copy of the DD214 form must be submitted at the time of application.

Knowledge & Abilities:
Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue principles; apparatus and equipment; fire prevention, inspections, rules of evidence, local state and federal safety laws, codes and laws affecting fire prevention and department operations; pre-hospital care; education and instruction principles.
Ability to plan and direct the activities of subordinates; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relations with other departments, agencies, and the public; operate an office computer and a variety of word processing and software applications; prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive verbal and written reports; operate two-way radio and other communications equipment; make public presentations; think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; function as the Incident Commander or any Section position within the Incident Command System.
Education:
Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college with major course work in Fire Science or related field. A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Fire Technology or a related field is highly desirable.
Experience:
Six years of increasingly responsible experience with a full-service municipal fire department, including at least three years of supervisory responsibility.
License or Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C or higher California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
Possession of a California Fire Service Training and Education System (CFSTES) Fire Officer Certificate. Completion of CFSTES Chief Officer Certification is a condition of passing probation.
Possession of a valid Emergency Medical Technician certificate and a valid CPR certification; ability to be qualified under CICCS for applicable positions.
This position is covered by the Dixon Public Safety Mid-Manager's Association (DPSMMA)
CalPERS TIER DEFINITIONS - MOU INTERPRETATION OF CALPERS TIERS
CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year and this position is full-time.
Advancement of Vacation Accrual Rate: Employees will be eligible to apply prior years of service employed as a Firefighter with a California City, County, State Agency or other agency recognized in the State of California as a Fire Department for the purpose of determining a higher vacation accrual rate tier upon hire.
Future Salary COLAs:
July 2025 - 4%
Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (3 % @ 55 formula for ClassicCalPERS members and 2.7% @ 57 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does notparticipate in social security.
Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs. City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance. Maximum Family Medical Benefit Allowance: $2,025 per month.
Administrative Leave Pay: 104 hours per fiscal year (use it or lose it) 50% cash out option.
Bilingual Pay: $100 per month upon certification.
Education Incentive:
Physical Fitness Incentive: $250.00 per month upon certification.
