The Mark II Tamper Operator handles the maintenance and operation of a Mark II Tamper as part of the company's surfacing unit. A Railroad Tamper Operator is an hourly skilled craft position that works on construction/maintenance projects and any combination of the duties below. A Mark II Operator performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates. The individual in this position will also be trained on and operate specialty railroad machinery that include a Tamper machine and Ballast Regulator (experience on these machines is a plus). The applicant is being hired with the intent of being used as an operator of a motor grader and our on-track machines. Some travel/weekend work should be expected. 

What You'll Do: 
Operate all machinery in a safe manner, keep equipment clean and well-maintained, perform required maintenance, and notify supervisor/mechanic if equipment needs repair 
Proper pre-start and daily maintenance, including lubrication and required documentation 
Monitor all engine gauges 
Operating skills in blade control 
Scrape and level dirt, shape and blade sub grades 
Balance and rough shaping of base course materials 
Operate to fine grade specifications, fine grade horizontal surfaces, shoulders and slopes, and perform dressing of shoulders and slopes 
Grade plan requirements and set grade standards 
Understand and use surveying equipment (levels, grade rods, GPS Rovers, etc.) 
Understand elevations and grade stakes 
Understand basic survey nomenclature as well as production and quantity requirements 
Demonstrate the ability to lead a crew, delegate work within work scope, and assist crews with necessary labor on an as-needed basis 
Use automatic grade control system 
Schedule work, maintain production, and set forth specifications and plans 
Judge distance and slopes accurately and make decisions based on verifiable standards 
Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts including operating on-track machinery 
Ability and willingness to be trained as well as train others on the machine

REQUIREMENTS: 

What We Need from You: 
At least two years of previous experience as a Mark II Jupiter 2 system required 
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred 
Valid drivers license required 
Pre-employment background check and drug screen required 
Understand work directions and communicate effectively with Superintendents and fellow employees 
Ability to stand for extended periods of time; stoop, bend, and crouch; lift and carry 50-90 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with  assistance; frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes in conjunction with the use of hand power tools; climb on/off heavy mobile equipment safely; walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground, in varying weather 
Maintain constant alertness to the multiple activities of the construction site, including activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment 
Work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e. extreme heat, rain, etc.) 
Work near heavy equipment and moving machinery with periodic exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust
