Our client has been in business since 1944 and have a large labor force of skilled craftsman with a full support staff of professionals who comprise of engineering, project management, QA, EHS, accounting, contracts, and human resources.

 

Job Summary

Our client is looking for a Mechanic/Machinist who will be responsible for repairing and maintaining shipboard mechanical equipment. Fixing, servicing, aligning, setting up, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical principles. Inspects, maintains, and repairs marine vessels of all sizes.  Works on vessels’ hulls, engines, transmissions, navigational equipment, and sometimes electrical propulsion.  Must possess knowledge of general mechanics of marine vessels in additional to knowledge of general machines to repair marine vessels and/or marine components, and parts.

 

Job Description

  • Works closely with the Project Manager(s) to ensure timely and cost-efficient completion of projects and/or jobs.
  • Supervises repair of mechanical components, manufacture and repair of components by machining, fabricating components with CNC cutters, mills, lathes, disassembly/reassembly of various shipboard machinery/equipment, and installation/re-installation of shipboard machinery/equipment. 
  • Confers with operators and observes, tests, and evaluates operation of machinery and equipment to diagnose cause of malfunction.
  • Supervises other Mechanic/Machinist functions to include: disassembling of machinery and equipment to remove parts and make repairs; examines parts for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear; repair, replace, adjust, and align components of machinery and equipment; clean and lubricate parts, equipment, and machinery; test-run repaired machinery and equipment to verify adequacy of repairs; repair and replace electrical wiring and components of machinery; record repairs and tests motor for conformance to specifications and operations, using tachometers, monometers, voltmeters, ammeter, and stroboscope.
  • Supervises union ship workers engaged in mechanical and machinist duties ensuring accomplishment of assigned work on time and within budget.  Enforces safety and environmental regulations.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers, contractors, and subcontractors to build and maintain solid relationships.
  • Generates job assignments and communicates to subordinate employees, makes recommendations to the Production Manager on matters related to hiring, termination, suspension, advancement, promotion, demotion, discipline, and addresses or adjust employee grievances and other supervisory duties as required. 
  • Determines workforce staffing to maximize efficiency and beat project.
  • Prepares various forms and reports for review.
  • Leads and develops Assistant Superintendent, foreman, lead man, and production team members.
  • Advises PM on status of all assigned projects, potential obstacles and delays and plans to minimize impact and beat project goals.
  • Leads and develops the mechanic/machinist department team.
  • Handle various administrative duties such as report writing, performance reviews, responding to email, interviews candidates, and form completion.
  • Manages team members on use of equipment and/or tools.
  • Estimates time, manpower, and materials required for assigned jobs.
  • Evaluates team member performance and correct as necessary.
  • Complies with requirements of the CBA.
  • Assesses team member skills and provide necessary training opportunities as required to enhance or address deficiencies.
  • Understands crane and rigging operations. Able to direct crane operators and riggers in the safe and efficient lifting operations assigned.
  • Ability to create and submit crane and rigging lift plans for various entities and comply with all regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a positive and respectful attitude and conduct her/himself with integrity and in a polite, professional manner treating customers and co-workers courteously and respectfully.
  • Communicates regularly with Officers, Managers, & Supervisors about the different divisions and department’s issues.
  • Consistently be on time for work, meetings and appointments and deliver work projects by assigned due dates.
  • Maintain assigned work areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Maintain and ensure the safety of all assigned equipment.
  • Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Meet productivity goals and quality standards as set by management.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and balance priorities.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office

 

Skills Required

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
  • Experience with US Navy Ship repair/NAVSEA regulation is preferred.
  • Proficient with Word and Excel.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in shipyard heavy industry is required.
  • Extensive knowledge of ship repair processes.
  • Knowledge of managing Federal Contracts.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Interpersonal skills, good attitude, and exceptional work ethic.
  • Work requires establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.
  • Perform duties of his/her job and as assigned by Management.

 

Education/Training/Certifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Associates degree in Industrial Trades/Applied Science is preferred.

 

Additional Requirements

  • Must be flexible in work hours.
  • A requirement for initial certification and re-certification (every five years) is verification from a licensed physician or physician assistant that the applicant is physically fit and free of debilitating illness and injury that could inhibit the individual from effectively performing the duties of a Structural Superintendent. Among the criteria that the licensed physician or physician assistant will assess are (but not limited to):
    • Work in extreme temperature (heat and cold) for extended periods exceeding one hour.
    • Safely move about on slippery, sloping, uneven and unstable surfaces.
    • Safely enter, move about within and egress cargo tanks, cargo holds and other confined spaces that may involve maneuvering over 6 ft (1.8 m) ship framing; climbing up and down 30 ft (9.1 m) vertical ladders and 80ft (24.3 m) stairways.
    • Safely move between spaces and into/out of compartments on marine vessels that can involve stepping over a door threshold or coaming of 24 inches (61 cm) in height; moving through restricted openings or man holes of 24 inches by 24 inches (61 cm X 61 cm), crouching (lowering height by bending knees); kneeling (placing knees on ground); and stooping (lowering height by bending at the waist).
    • Manipulate mechanical devices using manual and digital dexterity, and strength to open and close watertight doors that may weigh up to 55 pounds (25 kg).
    • Perform visual inspections and surveys that can involve the use of hand tools such as spanners, valve wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers.
  • Must show proof of your legal right to work in the United States.
  • This position requires US Citizenship due to security clearance required for base access.
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) Credential to gain access to federally controlled work sites.
  • All candidates must submit to and pass a post-offer drug screening and a background check before employment begins. Failure to complete any of these steps will result in disqualification.
  • Valid State of Hawaii drivers’ license in good standing, class 3 or higher.
  • Candidates must have access to reliable transportation to get to work and other job sites on time for the start of shift.
