Overview:

Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, the pharmacy technician engages in the preparation, control an distribution of medications. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities:
- Accurately and efficiently perform computer functions according to department policies. Includes, but not limited to the pharmacy computer system/electronic health record, automated dispensing equipment, packaging machine software and departmental email.
- Understand pharmaceutical terms, abbreviations, symbols and commonly used in prescribing and dispensing medications. Perform calculations necessary to prepare compounded medications.
- Process new prescriptions and refills. Fill medication orders in an accurate and timely manner, including new or lost doses, floor stock replacement items and unit dose cartfill.
- Transport medication to/from nursing units, including controlled substances, per department protocol/policy
- Restock automated dispensing cabinets according to current department procedures.
- Perform non-sterile compounding and repackaging.
- Perform sterile compounding using aseptic technique according to policy and procedure under the supervision and direction of a pharmacist. Products may include parenteral nutrition, batched IV products, and hazardous medications or chemotherapy. *PRN Technicians may not be required to complete this task*
- Respond to phone call inquires and walk-up service requests, resolving issues or redirecting them appropriately.
- Restock emergency/ crash carts and kits according to department protocol
- Assist in maintaining drug and department supplies at appropriate levels. Follows department procedures for checking in, scanning, packaging and barcoding medications
- Perform monthly inspection of assigned areas following the standard of practice guidelines for medication storage, control and dating. Removes expired medications, rotates stock, cleans and organizes assigned areas.
- Maintain appropriate licensure requirements, continuing education requirements, competency requirements and updates knowledge/ skills on regular basis by participating in departmental meetings, educational programs, in-services. Completes competency requirements successfully in a timely manner.
- Assist in developing and maintaining training materials as needed
- Assist in special projects not requiring clinical decision-making capacity as assigned by pharmacy leadership.
- Assist in training of new staff memebers.
- Travel to Carle Eureka Hospital may be required for the provision of pharmacy services such as automated dispensing equipment restock and maintenance.
Qualifications:
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS Pharmacy Technician License Illinois; Must submit proof of IDFPR application upon hire date to be eligible for 60 day allowance to obtain license within 60 days and Certified Pharmacy Technician (PTCB) For pharmacy technicians licensed after December 31, 2007. Must be certified within two (2) years of licensure acquired date. Exempt: Anyone enrolled in a first professional degree program in pharmacy and designated a "student pharmacist" by IDFPR. within 2 years or Certified Pharmacy Technician (NHA) For pharmacy technicians licensed after December 31, 2007. Must be certified within two (2) years of licensure acquired date. Exempt: Anyone enrolled in a first professional degree program in pharmacy and designated a "student pharmacist" by IDFPR. within 2 years.
