Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS), is actively seeking Engineering, Professional, Technical, and administrative support personnel as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y‑12 National Security Complex located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant located in Amarillo, Texas.
Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance Y-12's core mission to ensure a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear deterrent, which is essential to national security. Though employed by AIS, the employee will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff employed directly by the security complex. Pay, benefits, Human Resources, and Employment Management functions are provided by AIS.
Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Job Title: Weld Engineer
Responsible for providing support to the Projects Engineering group, existing facilities operations, construction, and maintenance activities. Project support includes participation in designs ranging from scope definition, feasibility and conceptual studies, and preliminary/detailed designs.
Prepares welding requirements for procurement documents, welding, brazing, and bonding procedures in compliance with applicable code requirements.
Solves problems in designing and maintaining plant facilities and processes.
Responsible for training site personnel from engineering, maintenance, and construction on the welding requirements, criteria, and compliance documents applicable for performing work activities.
Reviews design output documents for welding technical data for compliance with national codes and standards and company approved procedures and policies. Evaluates bid proposals for technical compliance of welding submittals, reviews vendor submittals, and conducts vendor surveillances to ensure compliance to contractually specified welding requirements.
Will be assigned field activities supporting on-site organizations, including on-site subcontractors, performing welding, brazing, bonding activities or non-destructive examination activities associated with welding, brazing, or bonding that falls within the scope of the Welding Program Manual. This includes review of on-site work packages involving welding to ensure that design output is complete and correct and has appropriate hold points.
Minimum Requirements:
The candidate must have extensive technical knowledge in respective national consensus codes and standards (AWS D1.1, ASME B31, and ASME Section IX Welding codes are particularly beneficial).
Requires a Q clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
Preferred job requirements:
Experience working as a welding engineer under a NQA-1 quality system; American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector Certification; ability to work in a project team environment; ability to follow procedures and work within a rigorous work process; ability to estimate, plan, and track progress for preparation of discipline deliverables; and good written and oral communications skills.
Education & Requirements:
B.S. degree with Welding Engineering / Welding Engineering Technology concentration from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program. A person with an ABET accredited B.S. degree in a related engineering / science discipline with at least 2 years of experience working as a welding engineer in a fabrication or manufacturing environment may be considered but at least 5 years of experience is preferred.
Pre-employment Drug Screen - external applicants selected for this position are required to successfully complete a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Medical Exam(s) - Job related pre-placement medical examinations may be required for this position.
This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. If determined as such, this position would be identified as a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in addition to the pre-employment drug screen.
